Abstract :
This paper proposes an architecture based on SNMP for the management of VANTAGE, an ACTS project aiming at providing ATM connections to remote users via VSAT. In addition to a comprehensive discussion of such scheme, the transmission of management information over VANTAGE is addressed in order to extend SNMP, which is originally designed for TCP/IP networks, to manage a network which consists of a distributed ATM switch including transmission equipment of the VSAT system and other equipment. A comparison between SNMP and TMN based schemes is also given. In terms of service provision, equipment availability, flexibility, interoperability, popularity and the cost of implementation, the SNMP based VANTAGE network management is very attractive and straight forward
