Abstract

Differentiated services (DiffServ) facilitate packet classification in the Internet. In this paper, we develop a service model for an assured forwarding (AF) PHB group that has the notion of “service guarantees”. In particular, we extend the “olympic service” model proposed for the AF PHB group to include guarantees on packet drop rates. We propose an enhanced random early detection buffer management scheme, referred to here as AMRED-G, to support service guarantees using the AF PHB group. It is based on buffer dimensioning and adaptive adjustment of drop thresholds
