Abstract
This paper introduces a polarimetry technique applicable to the determination of the 3-dimensional state of stress in solids. These solids may be transparent as well as nontransparent. In the latter case a physical simulation is introduced. The method is based on the application of a reconstructive tomography principle and operates in a two-stage way: at first, a set of experimental date is measured and later a numerical calculation is performed. The method is a compound of a novel general approach to the durability analysis of brittle structures
