Abstract
This paper aims to illustrate how the source forming part of a modern microwave measurement system can be significantly simplified and improved if it is tailored to a specific measurement task. By first considering the major requirements of such a source namely speed, accuracy, portability and cost, the design of a traditional microwave synthesizer is contrasted with that of a new architecture specifically designed for use in a modern swept measurement system.
