Abstract
When first introduced, variable frequency drives (VFDs), also known as adjustable speed drives (ASDs) seemed to be an ideal tool for use in industrial production and process applications which used induction motors as prime movers. However, several negative effects, the most drastic of which was increased motor failures, resulted. This paper discusses some of these negative effects, some possible solutions and a predictive test method designed to avert such failures of induction motor insulation
