Abstract
The history of development of the Direct Broadcasting Satellite (DBS) system in Japan is quickly overviewed. Broadcasting Satellite-3 (BS-3) is used for DBS service at present. The main technologies, including transponders and antenna systems and service provided by this satellite, are introduced. Recent developments in receiver and antenna systems to receive DBS signals are also introduced. Future technologies for broadcasting satellite systems such as the 22GHz-band multibeam satellite broadcasting system and the COMmunication and broadcasting Engineering Test Satellite (COMETS) are discussed.
