Abstract :
The target is to integrate future 3rd generation mobile systems (UMTS) with the future broadband integrated services digital networks (B-ISDN) by interworking to UMTS service specific protocols over the radio interface. The main requirements are efficient use of radio resources, support of a wide range of services and high quality of service (QoS). Enhancements might be made to B-ISDN or conversely mobility servers added to asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) switching elements to support the interworking requirements of UMTS. Transport over the radio interface results in very high error rates and delays compared to transport in the fixed network. Interworking options are considered at ATM, ATM adaptation layer, bearer and service level for a range of services
