  • Abstract
Today the modern gas detector is a sophisticated piece of modern electronic instrumentation which enables complete protection of the user to be achieved. As well as having to monitor the hazardous area for flammable and toxic gases the gas detector has to conform to the necessary standards to ensure it is safe when used in the hazardous area itself. There are some techniques which are mainly applied to gas detection, such as the use of breathing devices or sinters, to which the same standards do not apply internationally. The authors discuss the need for certification and discuss certification in the UK and Europe. The requirements for various components of the gas detectors are discussed. Quality assurance during manufacture, and maintenance and repair are also discussed
