Abstract
The author gives a brief history of the introduction of electricity into mines and early research and certification. Statutory requirements including: prevention of firedamp ignition; Mines Inspectorate pitworthiness scheme; and certification and approval, are discussed. Recognised national standards for protection against firedamp ignition and compatibility of apparatus are discussed. The relative European regulations are also discussed
