  • Abstract
    In this paper, a multi-ROIs medical image compression algorithm with edge feature preserving is proposed. By taking advantage of characteristics of medical image and human eye, the algorithm extracts image edge information by using canny operator first, and then divides image into regions-of-interest (ROIs) and non-ROIs. To ROIs, lossless compression algorithm JPEG2000 is used. To non-ROIs, high compression ratio algorithm SPIHT is used. The experimental results show that our algorithm has following advantages: (1) The algorithm has high compression ratio as well as keeping the quality of ROIs; (2) The algorithm can deal with edge Gibbs effect and improve the quality of image reconstruction; (3) The algorithm is adaptive and practical, which can be used for remote medical image compression, storage and transfer.
