Abstract :
We consider maximum likelihood trellis decoding of multilevel coded modulation optimised for finite BER. We introduce a class of optimised block coded modulation (BCM) schemes for 8-PSK with a very simple trellis decoder, and show they perform significantly better than conventionally-designed BCM schemes
