Abstract
This paper describes an improved technique for identification of coherent regions. In this technique, the coherent generators are identified using a pattern recognition method called hierarchical clustering technique. This method is based on the derivation of the generators´ parameters and measures distances among generators. Through measuring the generators´ distances, the hierarchical clustering method identifies the coherent generators in power systems. Generators are grouped in such a way that those with similar behaviors are close with each other in a same group and dissimilar ones are spaced farther apart. Hierarchical cluster analysis reveals data patterns easier than recognizing the distance matrix generators. The proposed method is applied to the 16-generators and NPCC New England test system.
