Abstract :
A novel type of millimetre-wave radio transmitter has been produced, for which zero electrical power is required. This radio transmitter operates purely from a fibre input as part of a radio-fibre system, and is capable of generating an output power of ¿20 dBm (or more than ¿5dBm with a small area solar panel supplying less than 10mW of electrical power) at a frequency of 30GHz. The transmitter (excluding antenna) has a volume of 5cm3, and a weight of 13g. A video transmission experiment has been performed using this transmitter to demonstrate the principle of zero electrical power operation.
