Abstract :
This qualitative study investigates one mechanism for teaching nursing students to be prepared to handle difficult patient situations. Students were required to proactively assess a clinical situation prior to engaging in a solution. This concept of ldquoproactiverdquo reflection utilizing clinical simulations in a nursing laboratory was tested to determine if exposing students to these situations would allow them to be more effective when dealing with the ldquoreal worldrdquo situations they would encounter as a nursing student and practicing nurse. Simulation situations based on previously reported ldquoresonantrdquo encounters with patients were developed and downloaded into the clinical simulation mannequins. Students encountered these ldquopatientsrdquo and their responses were videotaped. They then wrote post-occurrence reflection with the aid of the video tape. Qualitative analysis of these situations was conducted and the pilot data will be used to refine clinical simulations for students to be exposed to during the course of their nursing career.
