Abstract
Human-oriented is the core concept of China´s current public service and serving public became the ultimate purpose of government portal websites. In order to increase public use and improve public satisfaction of government portal website, it is of crucial importance to make sure that the website is built user-centered. As a new methodology on web design, usability perfectly expresses the concept of user-centered design. Based on prior research on usability, this paper presents an experiment method in understanding usability. It also introduces usability metrics on government portal websites and puts them into practical application by using them in an experiment. Through the experiment, the paper identifies particular usability problems of the given websites and finally proposes several practical advices for the further improvement of government portal websites.
