Abstract :
Bonneville Power Administration is experiencing an unprecedented growth of wind generation resources in its Balancing Authority Area. In order to accommodate the amount of wind that is planned, BPA has had to create new processes in order to limit the amount of balancing resources being used due to the variation of wind. The calculation of the balancing resource requirements and the resulting short-term solutions will be discussed, and then the presentation will evolve to the solutions that are being worked on in BPA and across the industry, including multiple national labs, to mitigate the effects of variable generation on an interconnection.
