Abstract
The cost-cumulant control paradigm provides a simple method for determining a state feedback control law which manipulates the value of a finite linear combination of cost cumulants of a finite time integral quadratic form cost associated with a class of linear stochastic systems. This control paradigm is especially useful for the response control of civil structures assailed by earthquakes and wind with a naturally occurring process which is well modeled in the stochastic sense. The present paper reports the application of cost-cumulant control, based upon the first three cost cumulants, to Second Earthquake and Third Wind Generation Benchmarks for 20-story and 76-story buildings (http://www.nd.edu/∼quake/benchmarks) recently studied by numerous authors using a variety of control algorithms. The simulation results indicate that both performance and robustness improvements offered by the cost cumulants are possible in comparison with the benchmark baseline LQG design.
