Abstract
The paper outlines current research at The University of Birmingham and Manchester Metropolitan University aimed at assessing the impact of changes to the railway system. The paper describes the process of system topology and mereology modelling combined with compositional modelling techniques. These modelling methods are used to provide a decision support system suitable for use by railway planners, designers, operators and maintainers.
