Abstract :
Control room operators are faced with the challenge of sifting through ever increasing amounts of data provided to them by the systems they use on a day to day basis to manage the motorway and trunk road network in the UK. As the deployment of technology continues this situation will only get worse, which will hinder the ability of operators to differentiate between incidents and congestion. This paper reviews some of the ways in which new and existing detector technology can be used to assist the operators by presenting data in a format that allows informed decisions to be made quickly and efficiently.
