Abstract :
The need for 100 Gb/s Ethernet is clearly established because 1. this increased traffic is all IP- based, 2. nearly all these IP packets are encapsulated within Ethernet frames somewhere along their journey from origin to destination, 3. the need for the classic TDM channelization features provided by SONET/SDH have run their course, and 4. Ethernet encapsulation is simpler and less expensive than SONET/SDH encapsulation. This talk will touch on some of these technical issues, but the ultimate decision will be made based on economics, something which will need equipment development and testing to address.
