Abstract :
For the past 15 years CSIRO Atmospheric Research has used measurements made by the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer instrument flown on board the Advanced TIROS-N series of polar orbiting satellites to generate maps of an index of grassland curing for the state of Victoria. These maps are distributed to the Country Fire Authority and, in more recent years, to power generation companies, where they are used to assess fire risk. We describe the development of the technique, the algorithms employed and the ground-truthing of a new scheme designed to allow for varying atmospheric conditions and Sun illumination and satellite viewing geometry
