Abstract
This paper proposes an advanced method of island detection in power system network. We utilize the features of sparse matrix and vector for network topology. To detect islands, this method uses the column-wise search with the sparse matrix and classifies islands with vector. This algorithm is very fast and correct to detect islands. Also, it can be easy and simple to implement the program for topology processing. Contingency analysis program of KEMS (Korean Energy Management System), based on the algorithm presented, is currently under development at Power21 Corp. The KEMS including contingency analysis program will replace the existing EMS of KPX (Korea Power exchange) in the near future.
