It is analyzed the magnetizing surge which caused by a no-load transformer energization during black start which could make transformer differential protection and generator differential protection mal-operate. Taking a part of Hunan grids (230 kv transmission line from power plant in Zhexi to the transformer in Handing substation ) as an example, it is energized with two methods, which are energizing the transmission lines before energizing the no-load transformer and energizing the no-load transformer with transmission lines. Analyze the voltage, the current and the second harmonic of transformers and generator based on the simulation in the MATLAB of the two processes. It is concluded that those two methods don´t harm the power system, so energizing the transformer with transmission lines could be used during black start in this power system to reduce the steps and time of power restoration.
