Abstract
In this paper we consider a new approach to the parameterization of depolarization effects in electromagnetic scattering. We define a unitary reduction operator, which is used to generate an N-1 dimensional representation of depolarization in an N dimensional scattering problem. We illustrate the application of this technique to polarimetric radar backscatter from random media with various symmetries
