Abstract :
A multifunction radar, that is one which is required to perform both surveillance and tracking functions, presents a number of design challenges with regards to maximising its ECCM (Electronic Counter Counter Measures) performance. The paper describes the methodologies used to predict the performance of a set of ECCM techniques for a generic rotating, multifunction, phased-array radar (RM-PAR). To this end, the paper describes a number of different aspects of applying ECCM techniques to this type of radar. In some cases, such as in Section 2, the challenges are peculiar to a rotating array but in other cases the techniques are quite general. At first, a computer model for simulating a mix of electromagnetic (em) interfering signals, as perceived by the receiving patterns of a generic RM-PAR, is introduced. Subsequently, mathematical and Monte Carlo simulation procedures are used to predict the performance of a prescribed suite of ECCM devices that are used to counter the above mentioned em disturbances.
