Abstract
In this paper, it is shown that it is possible to operate a three-phase line with one phase open on a permanent basis, without altering the integrity of the system. This is known as asymmetrical operation (AO) of transmission systems. A compensation scheme for eliminating the zero and the negative-sequence currents resulting from the asymmetrical operation of a system of one line is presented. A practical example is presented showing the amount of series and shunt compensation required to operate one line in asymmetrical mode
