  • Abstract
Femtocells have emerged as a promising solution for increasing network capacity to cope with the exponential growth of mobile video traffic. However, the randomness of wireless channel and cross-tier interference may cause frequent interruption or fluctuation of video playback, which is challenging for wireless video streaming. In this paper, we consider a femtocell scalable video streaming system in which the femto base station purchases interference quota and provides scalable video streaming service to mobile user under dynamic channel conditions and interference price. We propose a dynamic power and layer selection strategy for maximizing the long-term weighted sum of video quality and cost subject to a constraint on playback smoothness (i.e., interruption and fluctuation). In addition, the proposed algorithm does not require any priori knowledge of the channel dynamics, and is capable of operating online with the currently available information. We also conduct simulations to show the performance of the proposed algorithm.
