Abstract
Dynamic models which take the form of coupled set of differential and algebraic equations (DAEs) are widely used in process systems engineering. Necessary conditions of optimality for optimal control problems involving such models are derived. Interestingly, an optimality condition in the form of a strong maximum principle is shown to be valid only under a convexity hypothesis. However the authors prove a weak maximum principle even in the absence of convexity
