Abstract
Motorcycle setup is fundamental for the safety of the occupants. A correct setup of the motorcycle is mainly achieved by means of a correct suspension regulation. In fact, the road holding and stability of the vehicle largely depends on the suspension settings. Static compression of the suspension spring is determined by the load that the vehicle is carrying. As a consequence, variations of the static load on the vehicle modify the static equilibrium point with respect to the optimal value. The system we describe is able to counterbalance load variations and to correct the suspension preload in a continuous way. It executes a closed-loop control algorithm that adjusts the preload and maintains constant the average value of the suspension stroke, which is measured by means of a linear position sensor. A proof-of-concept demonstration has been realized equipping a motor-scooter with the control system developed and carrying out several road tests. Data collected during road tests are presented and discussed.
