  • Abstract
A novel approach to the design of smart spatially aware sensing and actuation networks is presented, which promises benefits in a wide range of applications with significantly reduced infrastructure cost, and increases in distributed functionality and capability, both at first fit and for in-service upgrade and modification. The approach is set in the context of a range of exemplars: wide area monitoring systems; and building and plant monitoring and control systems. Foundational features are described that provide the key properties of spatial awareness and spatial diffusion; and resulting network organizations and messaging. Test results illustrate operational benefits in terms of increased network efficiency, and application benefits in terms of several smart distributed operations.
