Abstract :
The Varian VKL-7811W klystron was designed specifically for powering the CEBAF accelerator. The design of this klystron was described by McCune (1987). Since then, the design effort was completed, engineering models were evaluated, and quantity production has begun. The features developed during the original design effort have been maintained while incorporating enhanced manufacturability. Klystron production is now proceeding at 13 tubes per month. The tube provides 5-kW CW (continuous-wave) output power at 1497 MHz and is permanent-magnet focused with a four-cavity interaction circuit. A modulating anode is included to permit power control. The authors review the klystron design features, describe the tube development program, and present the performance characteristics measured on the final design.<>
