Abstract :
A general purpose Doppler current profiler is described. The instrument is self contained in that it requires no additional computer nor does it require a keyboard. The heart of the instrument is a 40 MHz \´386 supporting two floating point DSP processors on a single board. There is no firmware in the system. All code is contained on a built-in hard drive and is updated from a 3.5" disk. Instrument control is by means of a touch panel. There is sufficient computational power to perform over one-thousand 1024 point FFT\´s per second. The hardware supports coded pulse pair transmissions or un-coded transmissions as desired. The system is tunable from 75 kHz to well over 2 Mhz with a resolution of about 1 Hz. Transmit power level is controlled by software and there is complete built-in test capability
