Abstract :
A new single-point Doppler sensor suitable for high-resolution measurements of 3-axis fluid velocities has been developed. The device derives all velocity components from a common sampling volume, about 0.2 cm3 in size, and located 5 cm away from the sensor probe. The measurement volume may be located just a few mm away from any solid boundary which makes the instrument suitable for boundary layer studies. A sampling rate of 25 Hz combined with a short-term velocity error of order 1-10 mm/s also make the device suitable for some turbulence measurement applications. The sensor have been subjected to an extensive series of tests to evaluate its performance under a wide variety of flow conditions. This paper describes the main features of the sensor, and presents some of the evaluation test results
