Abstract :
XML and XML-based technologies play an important role in various areas of control systems. As a description language, XML can be used for different functions such as on-line data, databases, static text, pictures, and multimedia. In addition to software management, XML can also be used as a security measure in Web portals and as an interface description for field device tools. Implementation of XML requires the definition of semantics and automation-related requirements. A common model requires the following specifications: (1) open extensible descriptions; (2) uniform object model, identification methods, reference methods, and version handling, (3) namespace rules, and (4) specific descriptions by inheritance. An example of an application of XML was illustrated in PROFIBUS/PROFINET.
