Abstract :
In this paper, voltage stability is evaluated by both dynamic PV curves and time-domain simulations, considering the combined dynamic control effects of a static compensator (STATCOM) and transformer on-load-taps (OLT). The studied system is heavily loaded at two locations and an 80 MVAr STATCOM is connected to improve the voltage stability of entire system for a contingency of a three-terminal line outage. The results presented in this paper: (a) show that a STATCOM can greatly improve the voltage stability of a heavily loaded system; (b) quantify the combined impacts of STATCOM and OLT control; (c) illustrate that the margin of stability can be easily and effectively evaluated by PV curves; and (d) correlate time-domain simulations and PV curves for a system with a STATCOM and OLT dynamic control
