Abstract
The logical systems description project has been established to produce requirements specifications of future submarine command systems. The paper describes one particular aspect of this strategy, namely the development and use of reference models. It begins by outlining the LSD project strategy and goes on to describe why reference models are necessary. The development of explicit reference models takes place during domain analysis and is dealt with in some detail, describing the method used together with its application by the LSD project to produce five domain specific reference models. The use of these models by the project is illustrated, taking as an example the elicitation activity. Finally the LSD project experience is reviewed
