Abstract
Reports on various aspects of ARE´s research on the application of KBS principles to problems in naval command and control. It outlines the problem domain, covering both operational and procurement issues, and outlines the rationale and the implications of introducing a new technical approach. It presents, as major components of naval C2 , the four topics of data fusion, tactical situation assessment, reactive resource allocation, and forward resource planning, and outlines activities in all four areas within ARE´s programme of laboratory demonstrators. The advantages of combining these demonstrators within an integrated combat-management prototype are discussed, and the paper aims at implementing a subset of this overall concept as a major sea-going technology demonstrator
