Abstract
As the size of motors being manufactured increases, the issue of motor cooling becomes more and more critical. The high ambient temperature and the severe corrosive environment of many locations in the Chemical, Oil & Gas (COG) industry, in addition to the scarcity of fresh water, make this selection a complex one. This paper evaluates the differences between the two most common totally enclosed motor constructions, the air-to-air and water-to-air. A comparison between the two in terms of size, weight, efficiency and cost are analyzed in an effort to assist in selecting the most appropriate construction for future installations.
