Abstract :
The changing telecommunication environment in terms of service evolution, deregulation, and distribution technologies has a great impact on the network structures and requirements for the equipment. These changes heavily impact the access area, i.e. the area between the service nodes and the subscribers. Within this paper a concept of a wire-based Digital Broadband Access System called DBAS will be described. Its design target is to support the above mentioned changes. This means the flexible delivery of today´s services and of new emerging broadband services in the residential as well as in the business area. DBAS accommodates this by using a modular FTTC architecture with a wideband and a broadband module together with an advanced end-to-end management system. The drop is optionally based on the existing copper network and thus allows the reuse of already installed infrastructure. The advantage of this concept is the possibility of a stepwise upgrade driven by service demand. The system will enable operators to stay successful in the new highly competitive environment with reasonable up front investment
