Abstract
The potential applications for compression technologies in television systems are increasing as compression is used throughout programme production as well as for contribution and distribution networks. The requirements for these applications are diverse, and such technologies will need to be flexible and easily integrated. The paper gives three examples of television applications: digital radio cameras, desktop production, and low-bitrate networking applications. In each case the requirements these applications impose on the compression technologies they employ are discussed.
