Abstract :
An adaptive radio resource allocation strategy for GPRS/EDGE system is proposed in this paper, which is the optimal smooth transition solution from 2G towards 3G. The proposed long-term allocation mechanism and short-term channel sharing mechanism can improve resource utilization by configuring channels effectively for both voice and data traffic. In addition a statistical model is introduced to estimate voice traffic, which is one of the features of the long-term allocation mechanism. The simulation results fully indicate that the proposed schemes can efficiently increase not only the traffic throughput but also the resource utilization.
