Abstract
A model based classification scheme is proposed for normal incidence return. The model produces a time-series of the signal based on a stochastic realisation of the seafloor. The response is modeled using the Kirchhoff approximation for seafloor interface backscattering and the small perturbation theory for volume contribution. The model is compared with data recorded on a calibrated parametric source for different bottom types, and strategies for classification of the sediments using the model are presented
