Abstract :
An error control scheme “QoS aware selective repeat automatic repeat request (QSR-ARQ)” is propose to facilitate video transmissions in a wireless mobile environment with certain QoS guarantees. This scheme uses the layer property of MPEG frames and considers different QoS requirements of different data sections within a video stream. QSR-ARQ overcomes the drawbacks of a conventional SR-ARQ and improves the data link protocol performance. Consequently the network throughput and the bandwidth efficiency are increased. QSR-ARQ defines three data classes and correspondent service classes, which cooperate with four major system components: an event handler, a scheduler, a timer manager, and a frame dropping controller. QSR-ARQ outperforms the conventional SR-ARQ in terms of the same QoS matrix. The computer simulation and performance evaluation proved the applicability and the effectiveness of QSR-ARQ. This error control scheme can also be applied to the applications that use component-based video compression methods
