Abstract
A new linear actuator is proposed to replace the rotating drive of an alternating fluid pump to reduce transmission losses. Two springs are used by the actuator to form an oscillatory system with the moving mass. Besides, to reduce eddy current losses, a rectangular system with a laminated iron core is used. The proposed structure combines permanent magnets with a reluctant system to produce the 300 W mechanical power over a 13 mm stroke fed directly from a single phase 60 Hz outlet. Ferrite magnets are used due to its low price leading to a minimum actuator cost. A mathematical model was developed to study the dynamic performance of the device. The simulation of the actuator´s dynamics shows that the main design criteria where correct and that the load requirements where satisfied
