Abstract
This paper presents different implementations of CORDIC algorithm on two field programmable gate array (FPGA) families, namely Xilinx XC4000XLA and VIRTEX series. Pipelining is used to improve the throughput and speed of the design. Xilinx foundation computer aided design (CAD) tools are used for synthesis, simulation and implementation on the FPGAs. A comparative study on the performance of these implementations is presented. Metrics for comparison and analysis are speed and cost. The area occupied by the design in the FPGA gives a measure of the cost. Based upon the metrics, the best design is identified.
