Abstract :
Information on the location of the phones can be used to estimate the speed at which the phones are moving. By tracking the speed variability of a substantial number of cell phones over time, the traffic flow characteristics of various highways can be estimated. A traffic flow estimation algorithm is developed by exploiting the occurrences of mobile handover which simulations are conducted with realistic wireless signal strength models. The accuracy of the estimation algorithm and dependencies between attributes involved are tested and analyzed.
