Abstract :
Many consumer electronic devices in the home are having network capability nowadays, e.g., TV which can access Internet, wireless high definition video streaming, VoIP telephony, just to name a few. On the other hand, bandwidth provided always looks inferior to the increasing demands. Therefore, Quality of Service (QoS) assurance of various home network applications becomes more and more critical to consumer´s experience. Generally, two kinds of QoS mechanisms are supported in Layer 2 by the current popular home network technologies, prioritized and parameterized, similar to Layer 3 QoS mechanisms as DiffServ and IntServ. In this paper, a survey of Layer 2 QoS provisions of several popular home network technologies is performed, including IEEE 802.11, MoCA, HomePlug AV and HomePNA. Besides, standardization work in UPnP (Universal Plug and Play) Forum to enable QoS interoperation of devices supporting heterogeneous home network technology is also introduced.
