Abstract
This paper discusses the effects of internal components on the radiation characteristics of two antennas in a semi-populated model of a mobile handset operating at LTE Band-13 (746-787) MHz. The antennas are both PIFAs that are designed to work at the uplink and downlink bands. The mobile handset is first simulated as a simple box made of printed circuit boards containing the two PIFAs only. Next, models of a battery and LCD screen are included. This addition of the semi-populated environment degrades the radiation efficiency of the two antenna system by 11%. The mutual coupling is also noted to decrease by 0.7 dB. Simulations of the antenna system with different feeding phase reveal that with the proper phase difference a significant increase in the antenna efficiency can be achieved.
