Abstract
This paper studies the interference effects in downlink channels of a multi-rate CDMA communication system employing variable length orthogonal spreading code (VLOS). We quantify the interaction between different rate users in terms of the output signal to interference plus noise ratio (SINR) of a conventional matched filter receiver followed by a RAKE combiner. We show that the high rate users cause significant interference to the low rate users which is proportional to their rate ratio; high rate users also cause significant interference to the desired high rate users due to the small processing gain of the desired high rate users
