Abstract :
The fiber data distributed interface (FDDI) standard refers to a 100 megabits-per second token ring network that supports synchronous and asynchronous data transmission. The media access protocol is based on the timed token access protocol which provides adjustment of the load offered to the ring by setting the target token rotation time (TTRT). The present paper describes an analytical model of a homogeneous FDDI network under the assumption of heavy load, which allows the TTRT to be frequently bid for and adjusted as and when the access time requirements of synchronous traffic changes. An algorithm to calculate the mean throughput of the network under frequent renegotiation has been derived. The behaviour of the FDDI network under frequent renegotiation is analysed.<>
